It’s becoming more and more common to combine regional and international business trips with leisure.
In 2016, the Dutch made 8.6 million business trips of which 55% had a destination abroad. Approximately 4.7 million one or multi-day business trips. The number of business overnight stays comes to 14.1 million. The Dutch traveller spent a total of around 4.4 billion euros during these trips.
Research from 2015 shows that almost half of the Dutch business travellers chose to combine a number of private days with their business travel. The travellers often also invite family or friends.
In 2019, business travellers will extend their trips for longer periods. Millennials no longer draw a distinction between leisure and business. On the contrary, they love to extend their business trip to enjoy a few more days of sightseeing, relaxing or finding out more about the country or city in which they are staying.
Because Wi-Fi is available almost everywhere in the world and the vast network of professional co-working spaces, it is easier than ever to combine business with leisure. According to Andrew van der Feltz from Expedia Media Solutions, this creates an opportunity to add a tourist element to the trip and to let the traveller stay longer.
