Millennials prefer vacations abroad over holidays in the Netherlands
Dutch millennials (ages 18 to 35) have undertaken some 6.9 million holidays in 2017. Nearly 60% of all holidays by millennials were spent abroad, with particularly city trips being popular. This is based on NBTC-NIPO Research on the Continuous Holiday Survey and additional research into the holiday behaviour of millennials.

Holiday in foreign countries more popular
In 2017, millennials made 4.1 million holidays abroad. In comparison with older generations, millennials tend to prefer composed journeys (29%), with both transport and accommodation pre-booked separately. Last year Spain (14%), Germany (13%) and France (11%) were the most popular holiday destinations for the millennial.
Millennials are pre-eminently the generation that books vacations online. In 2017 they booked 86% of foreign holidays online. In comparison with baby boomers (ages 55 to 70), millennials book their foreign holidays more often online with an airline (21%), via an online travel agency such as Booking.com (29%) or via a social travel site such as Airbnb ( 8%).
Millennials a.k.a. Generation Y
Millennials, also called the generation Y, are people aged 18 to 35 years. Within the total population they have a share of about 20%. It is a generation that grew up during the digital revolution. Use of modern technologies and new media are integrated into their daily life. Millennials are characterized as independent, self-assured and internationally oriented.
