In 2017, 85% of the Dutch went on holiday in Europe, with a total of 18,9 million vacations. Especially the Western (42,5%) and Southern (28%) part of Europe are the most popular.

An interesting fact is the difference in short- and long stay vacations in contrast to the popularity of a destinations.
Long- and short stay vacations
On average, Spain is most popular among the Dutch, followed by France for a long-stay vacation. But if we take a look at the most popular destination in the summer period, Germany is leading. Germany is also the most popular for short-stay vacations, also in the winter period. Other popular destinations are Italy, Belgium and Austria.
Environment
When travelling to one of these destinations mentioned above, the Dutch mostly stay in or around a city (27%), at the seaside (24%) and in the mountains (18%).
