Schiphol Airport will lower its maximum number of departing travellers by an average of 18% per day (9,250 passengers) until at least October 31.These measures are taken because the security companies at Schiphol are not able to provide the number of security guards in the coming months that was previously indicated.
Schiphol Airport will lower its maximum number of departing travellers by an average of 18% per day (9,250 passengers) until at least October 31.These measures are taken because the security companies at Schiphol are not able to provide the number of security guards in the coming months that was previously indicated.
“This decision is bad news for passengers and airlines,” said COO Hanne Buis of Royal Schiphol Group. “Reduction is necessary to guarantee the safety of our passengers and employees. Everyone who works at Schiphol really does everything they can to make traveling via Schiphol as pleasant as possible. I appreciate that. I am incredibly proud of that.”
Schiphol calls on security companies to offer full schedules for security guards. Buis: “It’s clear that structural improvement is needed. Agreements have been made about this in the social agreement that we concluded last June. We are working hard on that with all parties involved.”
Until now,
September had a maximum of 67,500 local departing passengers per day and 69,500 for October. The new maximum will be 54,500 per day in September and 57,000 in October. The aim of setting a maximum is to guarantee safety for travellers and employees and to create a reliable process at the airport. Based on the capacity made available by Schiphol, the independent slot coordinator (ACNL) will consult with all airlines to achieve the required capacity reduction.

After consultation with airlines, Schiphol Airport sets a maximum number of travellers per day for the months of September and October. In September there is a maximum of 67,500 local departing travellers per day.
On most days in September, the airport’s capacity is in line with the expected supply. In October, the number of departing travellers is higher: 69,500 per day. The autumn holidays also fall during this period. Schiphol has informed airlines and travel organizations that an average of 3,500 passengers departing locally are expected too much in and around the two weeks of the autumn break.
Safety
The aim of setting a maximum amount of travellers per day is to guarantee safety for travellers and employees and to create a reliable process at the airport. All efforts are aimed at minimizing the consequences for travellers.
More security guards
The number of security guards that can be deployed continues to increase. It was previously announced that approximately 200 new security guards will be recruited in August, and another 80 security guards are expected to join in October. The deployment of so-called ‘security coaches’ also helps to optimize the flow in the terminal.
However, the maximum number of travellers per day is slightly lower than in August. This is due to the so-called seasonal effect: travellers use more bins at security control after the summer, because they wear more clothing. As a result, it takes a little longer before all hand luggage and the traveller are checked.
Maximum number
Sticking to a maximum number of departing travellers also helps to accommodate operational changes, such as delayed arrivals or departures. Almost all parties at the airport have limited staffing levels and any unexpected change can result in delays in the entire airport process at Schiphol.
Advice to travellers
Travelers are still advised to arrive at Schiphol at the time specified by the airline, but no more than four hours before departure. Travelers who arrive earlier will wait unnecessarily long because check-in counters or baggage drop-off points are not yet open. In addition, the line becomes extra long at times when travellers start queuing much earlier. Schiphol has intensified its checks on the four-hour rule since 25 July.
