In 2018 86% of the Dutch people had a daily online presence. More than 95% of people between 12 and 45 use the internet on a daily basis. For the age group between 45 and 65 the daily use is 90%, for the age group 65 to 75 it is 73%. Also, 45% of people above 75 years old use internet daily. The Netherlands are the online leader in Europe: 98% of the Dutch households have access to internet.
The Dutch like to book their holidays online. 73% of the Dutch people made reservations for their accommodation before they went on holiday. 66% of the Dutch people booked their complete holiday online. About 10% of people used a travel agency to book their holiday.
Social media usage in The Netherlands
Whatsapp is the biggest platform in The Netherlands, followed by Facebook and YouTube. WhatsApp has 11.5 million Dutch users, 8.3 million users use the app on a daily basis. Facebook lost 650.000 users in 2018 due to negative publicity and privacy concerns. Most of the Facebook leavers are young people between the age of 15 and 19. The number of people above 40 remained stable.
Where Facebook made a loss of 6% of users, Instagram gained 830.000 Dutch users in 2018, which counts for a 20% growth. The app has 4.1 million users, of which 2.1 million users can be found on the platform daily.
Pinterest also made a growth spurt with a growth of 18%. Pinterest now has more users than Twitter, closely followed by Snapchat.
